What SPF Actually Measures

SPF — Sun Protection Factor — measures how well a sunscreen delays UVB radiation from causing sunburn on protected skin compared to unprotected skin. It does not measure total UV protection, duration of protection, or UVA coverage.

The number itself represents a ratio. SPF 30 means it would theoretically take 30 times longer for UVB to redden protected skin than unprotected skin under ideal lab conditions. In practical terms, SPF 30 blocks roughly 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks about 98%; SPF 100 blocks approximately 99%. The difference between SPF 50 and SPF 100 is real but modest — neither is a license to skip reapplication.

The FDA regulates sunscreen as an over-the-counter drug in the U.S., meaning SPF testing follows a standardized protocol. A product must be tested on real subjects under controlled lighting to earn its labeled SPF number.

Broad Spectrum: The UVA Part of the Story

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are associated with premature aging and long-term DNA damage. They don't cause the visible redness of sunburn, which is why early sunscreens — tested only for SPF — could carry a high SPF number while offering almost no UVA protection at all.

The FDA's Broad Spectrum designation closes that gap. A product labeled "Broad Spectrum" has passed a specific critical wavelength test: it must provide UVA protection proportional to its UVB protection. In practical terms, a Broad Spectrum SPF 15 sunscreen can legally carry a claim that it reduces the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging when used as directed. SPF-only products without the Broad Spectrum label can only claim to help prevent sunburn.

PA ratings and the U.S. Broad Spectrum label are not directly interchangeable — they test for UVA protection differently — but both signal meaningful UVA coverage. A sunscreen displaying PA+++ or PA++++ alongside a high SPF is providing substantial protection across the UV spectrum.
